Neon is lighter than air. The gas is colourless, odourless and non toxic. Neon asphyxiates. Upon fluorescent discharge, the reaction-wise very inert, zerovalent rare gas displays a typical scarlet red colouration. Neon is used as a filling gas for fluorescent tubes, flash and stroboscope lights. Liquid neon possesses a 40 times bigger cooling power per unit of volume than liquid helium and about 3 times as much as liquid hydrogen.
