Thai Airways International PLC is the national carrier of Thailand and in March 2008, it successfully installed a MAXIGAS nitrogen gas generator from Parker domnick hunter at the new Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok to satisfy its nitrogen requirement for tyre filling.
The company operates domestic, regional and intercontinental flights from its base in Bangkok to key destinations around the world and within Thailand and requires a source of nitrogen for filling aircraft tyres.
Aircraft tyres need to be inflated with gas nitrogen due to its clean and dry composition and its ability to prevent deflation which is caused by oxygen permeation through the tyre wall.
Nitrogen therefore helps to maintain the correct tyre pressure throughout varying altitudes. Thai Airways International PLC had previously relied upon gas cylinder suppliers for a source of nitrogen however, with the inconvenience of frequent re-ordering and hassle with waiting for deliveries in addition to escalating gas costs, the company welcomed an alternative to satisfy its requirements.
MAXIGAS generators make nitrogen from compressed air via the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) method using carbon molecular sieve (CMS) regenerative technology. They offer superb reliability and efficiency due to a constant, controlled flow and pressure and are outstandingly cost-effective with an exceptionally low lifecycle ownership cost.
A MAXIGAS108 unit was specified and installed by Parker domnick hunter - RL (Thailand) Co. Ltd in March 2008 and provides the company with a nitrogen flow-rate of 21 Nm3/hr at 99.5%, boosted up to 300 barg. The high pressure nitrogen regulated to 2200 psi and 3500 psi, allows the company to carryout aircraft tyre filling and the filling of pressurised tanks for airplane hydraulic system usage respectively.
Kitipong Tuljittraporn, Aircraft Engineer at Thai Airways International PLC comments "The nitrogen generator has performed to its expectations and we are able to reduce the man hours needed to operate and maintain this system, compared to the previous method using cylinders. We can now get nitrogen at a touch of a button."
Somrat Jirawanichsakul, Sales Engineer at Parker domnick hunter confirms "It is an honour to have Thai Airways as one of our many satisfied customers. They are extremely pleased with the performance of the nitrogen generator as it has provided them with considerable cost savings, reliability and convenience compared to the previous cylinder supply".
